Demand generation: build interest and connect it to product value
Demand generation builds awareness and interest in a product and helps that interest develop into a buying decision. It can include education, demonstrations, events and follow-up. The useful question is which barrier keeps a suitable customer from considering or adopting the product, and whether the planned activity can remove it.

Demand generation, demand capture and lead generation
Teams use these terms differently. Salesforce describes demand generation broadly enough to include lead generation, nurturing and conversion. Other teams use it more narrowly for building awareness and preference. Agree on responsibilities and measures before using the label to divide a budget.
Demand capture responds to interest that already exists, such as a relevant search for a solution. Lead generation identifies potential buyers and creates a permitted way to continue the conversation. One activity can do more than one job: a useful webinar may introduce an unfamiliar approach, answer an active buyer's question and produce a requested follow-up.
A contact record does not establish purchase intent. Someone may download a guide for research, while a serious buyer may read several public pages without identifying themselves. Treat forms, attendance and content use as observations that need context.
| Work | Question | Evidence to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Build demand | Do suitable people understand why the product matters? | Relevant reach, understanding and consideration |
| Capture demand | Can people already looking for a solution evaluate the offer? | Relevant inquiries, evaluation and purchase |
| Generate leads | Who wants or permits an appropriate follow-up? | Valid contacts, fit, intent and response |
Choose the uncertainty before the channel
Find out whether the intended customer recognizes the problem, believes it is worth solving and can use the product's proposed solution. Interviews, lost-deal notes and support conversations can expose different barriers. A lack of awareness calls for a different response from an unsupported integration or a procurement requirement.
Consider a hypothetical reporting product for small agencies. Prospects already assemble client reports manually, but some do not know they can automate the task. A demonstration using a realistic workflow could make the alternative understandable. If interested teams then discover that their main data source is unsupported, record that as a product constraint rather than increasing promotional frequency.
Search can still help when buyers do not know a category name: they may search for the underlying problem or an existing alternative. Likewise, an account-based approach can include education, active evaluation and lead follow-up for named companies. Choose channels from evidence about the audience, not from a rule that demand generation must exclude search or target everyone.
Run a program small enough to learn from
Write down the audience, the belief or behavior you want to change and the evidence that would justify continuing. Choose a relevant offer, a distribution route and a spending limit. Include the work needed after an interested person responds: a useful evaluation, a clear answer from sales or a product experience that delivers the demonstration's promise.
For the reporting example, invite agencies with the supported data sources to a walkthrough. Keep the explanation available without requiring a sales conversation, and offer an optional evaluation with a clear next step. Track whether participants understand the use case and whether eligible evaluators produce a usable report.
Judge early signals and business outcomes on different time scales. Reach, questions and evaluation starts can inform the next test before enough purchases have occurred to assess acquisition economics. A small sample may be inconclusive. There is no universal three-month waiting period, and a longer sales cycle does not justify ignoring evidence that the audience or offer is wrong.
Measure interest without claiming every later sale
Use a combination of relevant reach, customer understanding, qualified inquiries, product evaluation and eventual customer value. Keep the definitions consistent across marketing, sales and product teams. More leads can coexist with fewer suitable customers, while an ungated resource may influence evaluation without producing a form submission.
Record known campaign interactions and ask customers how they heard about the product when that question is useful. Self-reported sources can reveal conversations that tracking missed, but they are still incomplete recollections. Branded searches and mentions may support an awareness hypothesis. An increase in direct traffic alone does not prove it: GA4 uses direct when a clear referral source is unavailable.
Attribution assigns credit within the recorded journey. It does not show how many sales would have happened without the program. Where feasible, use a well-designed holdout or experiment to estimate additional outcomes and report uncertainty. Otherwise describe the observed association, account for other changes and avoid adding the full value of the same deal to several channel totals.
FAQ
Does demand generation include lead generation?
It can. Some teams use demand generation for the whole process of building interest and converting it into customers, while others reserve it for awareness and preference. Define the team's responsibility before comparing budgets or results.
Can a small company do demand generation?
Yes. A focused demonstration, useful explanation or relevant event can test whether a specific audience sees value in the offer. Include staff time and follow-up in the cost, and do not treat a small, inconclusive test as evidence of a repeatable acquisition channel.
Is demand generation only for B2B?
No. Consumer products also need people to understand their value and consider using them. The route to purchase, the relevant audience and the observation period differ by product.
How long does demand generation take?
There is no fixed period. Understanding can change during a demonstration, while a buying decision may take much longer. Set early and later measures around the actual customer journey.
